Description

Imam Ibn Kathir's commentary on Surah At-Tawbah, verses 25-27, states: {Indeed, Allah has given you victory in many battlefields, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it availed you nothing, and the earth, vast as it is, became strait for you; then you turned back, fleeing. Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and sent down soldiers you did not see, and He punished those who disbelieved. That is [a great] punishment.} The recompense of the disbelievers. Then, after that, Allah will turn in mercy to whom He wills. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. This was when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the conquest of Mecca, and its affairs were in order, and most of its people had converted to Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) released them. He was informed that the Hawazin tribe had gathered to fight him, and that their leader was Malik ibn Auf ibn al-Nadr, and with him were the entire Thaqif tribe, the Banu Jashm tribe, the Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr tribe, and the Awza' tribe of the Banu Hilal, who were a small number, and some members of the Banu Amr ibn Amir and Auf ibn Amir. They had come with women, children, sheep, and livestock, and they had come with all their men and women. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to them with the army that had come with him for the conquest. It was ten thousand Muhajirun, Ansar, and Arab tribes. He was accompanied by those who had converted from the people of Mecca, who were the freed ones, numbering two thousand. So he marched with them to the enemy, and they met in a valley between Mecca and Taif called Hunayn. The battle took place there, early in the morning, in the dead of dawn..." End quote.
